Rita (Name changed) has been with Basha since the Rita (Name changed) has been with Basha since the very beginning of our Mymensingh workshop.
She'll tell you how making the queen and king-size bedspreads used to intimidate her. They were simply too big, requiring too many hours. Now they're actually her favorite thing to make, next to the smaller throws, which she says go quick.

Our stuffed elephants may look simple from the out Our stuffed elephants may look simple from the outside, but don't be fooled! One woman stitched the ears with a careful kantha stitch. Another carefully cut the shape out of fabric. Another used the machine to stitch it, turned it inside out, stuffed it, ensuring each one is firm enough to stand, but soft enough to squeeze. Once perfect, the final handstitching is done and it's ready to go to a new home! No assembly line, no shortcuts, just a hand crafted process that brings life changing work to women every day.

Put them together and that's us, a house of hope. Not really a metaphor either. It's a real place where women come to learn a trade, heal, and build something steady for themselves and their kids.

Asking a mother to choose between a paycheck and b Asking a mother to choose between a paycheck and being near her kids isn't much of a choice at all. So Basha didn't make her pick. The kids are down the hall, safe, fed, looked after, while their moms are down the other hall, stitching.

Everybody just gets to be where they need to be.

Kantha isn't something we invented. It's centuries Kantha isn't something we invented. It's centuries old, women in Bangladesh have been layering worn cotton and running a simple needle through it for generations, turning old cloth into something warmer and sturdier than it was before.
We just get to carry it forward, with the women who still know exactly how it's done.

Nine days, thousands of stitches in one blanket, all by hand.
Next time you wrap up in one of ours, that's what you're actually holding: months of practice and a needle that's been through a lot.
